CAGUAS. Thirty minutes away from the heart of San Juan, this easily accessible mall boasts over 100 shops, including exclusive boutiques and department stores. A food court provides a pleasant setting for refreshments between shopping.

The second largest shopping mall on the island is conveniently located just minutes away from San Juan and features an extensive selection of American department stores just in case homesickness strikes. Visit Sears, JC Penney , Children's Place or any of the other 200 shops located here, then rest with a light refreshment at the food court or watch the jet-like water display spray up to the second level.

HATO REY. San Juan boasts the largest mall in all of the Caribbean and Latin America. Plaza Las Americas has over 250 stores including the world's largest JC Penney store, Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Sears and Macy's. The food court is a popular spot to meet and relax, and it stays open one hour later than the mall shops. A movie theater provides entertainment for non-shopaholics that might tag along.

SANTURCE. For a true Puerto Rican shopping experience visit the Plaza del Mercado. Here you can observe housewives crowding elbow-to-elbow bargaining for their daily bread or try a little haggling yourself ­ prices for the produce, flowers, meats and cheeses are notoriously flexible. Plan to stay for lunch. Excellent roast pork sandwiches and tropical fruit shakes are available at some of the stalls and small local cantinas. Stay on into the evening for an off-beat Friday night happy hour that attracts both the buttoned-up and the bohemian looking for a lively time.

GUAYNABO. This upscale mall specializes in clothing, jewelry and footware boutiques. Located in Guaynabo, San Juan's tony neighborhood, over 150 stores are under one roof for your shopping pleasure. A movie theater and a food court featuring popular fast food restaurants provide other diversions.
